Olive oil contains anti-inflammatory agent

PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- A naturally occurring chemical found in extra-virgin olive oil is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent, scientists reported Wednesday.

The researchers at the Monell Chemical Senses Center, the University of Pennsylvania, The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, and Firmenich Inc., said the compound -- which they named oleocanthal -- inhibits activity of cyclooxygenase, or COX enzymes, a pharmacological action shared by ibuprofen.

The researchers said their finding is significant since inflammation increasingly is believed to play a key role in a variety of chronic diseases.

The findings are described in the Sept. 1 issue of the journal Nature.
