The Good Oil - For All of the Family!
Media Release - April 2007
The spotlight has been held firmly on olive oil in recent years for its high content of monounsaturated fatty acids and anti-oxidative agents. These contents are known for its protection against heart disease, lowering cholesterol and blood pressure, prevention of gall stone formation and colon cancer. But most are unfamiliar with some of the other benefits of the good oil, especially when it comes to other less known homeopathic remedies.
Olive oil is a great healthy alternative to butter, margarine and vegetable oils. For every one tablespoon of butter or margarine in recipes or cooking, substitute it for ¾ tablespoon of olive oil and see your fat consumption rapidly diminish.
There are many other uses for olive oil that many families and parents of young children find useful and cost effective. Some of the reported alternative uses for olive oil include:
- To treat lice on children - apply on hair, and leave on for at least 30 minutes, then shampoo out. Can also be used as a conditioner and preventative treatment
- To soothe cracked, damaged nipples from breastfeeding. Olive oil does not need to be washed off as safe to be ingested by the nursing infant
- To cure nappy rash - apply regularly to affected area
- Prevent stretch marks on pregnant belly by daily applications during pregnancy
- Relieves jellyfish or man-of-war stings by applying for immediate relief.
- Removes paint from hair - moistening a cotton ball with some olive oil and gently rub it into paint in hair.
- Dissipates cradle cap - common condition in young babies where there are crusty yellow scales forming a cap on the scalp. Rub the oil into the scalp at night, and in the morning, use a soft comb to gently lift the scales off before washing the scalp and hair with a very mild baby shampoo. This can be repeated each night until the scalp is clear.
- Soothes and nourishes baby's skin and chapped lips - apply several drops of olive oil in their bath each night.
